The Sir Edmund Hillary Project
The Sir Edmund Hillary Project of the Rotary Club Of Mount Victoria Inc. was established to administer capital
raised through the sale of one thousand $5 dollar banknotes serial numbers BA000001 to BA001000 personally signed by Sir Edmund and
authorised by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. 90% of the proceeds will be made available to The Himalayan Trust in support of
educational, medical, social and environmental development projects in Nepal.
To mark the 50th.
anniversary year of the Everest climb the Rotary Club of Mount Victoria Inc. decided to release 600 of
the 1000 signed Hillary $5 banknotes. The Club will release the 600 banknotes in three tranches, 200 at a price of US$555 each
[Various serial numbered banknotes have previously sold at higher values by auction and tender], followed by two tranches of
200 at a price yet to be determined (but no less than US$555). The Club will expand their reach of prospective collectors
of the banknotes with each offering.
The Rotary Club of Mount Victoria Inc. Wellington, New Zealand, have successfully raised funds for many
worthwhile local and international projects, and is proud to support The Himalayan Trust through the sale of these limited
edition commemorative banknotes.
The members of the Rotary Club of Mount Victoria Inc. are saddened by the death of Sir Edmund. We will
continue to raise funds through this project in memory of Sir Edmund to support the Himalayan Trust, which he established in
1961 to assist the Sherpa people.
'In 1995 Hillary Clinton, the wife of the then President of the United States of America, was presented with
the special signed banknote BA000095 by the Rotary Club of Mount Victoria, as a memento to commemmorate that year of her first
meeting with Sir Edmund Hillary. She has always expressed great admiration for Sir Edmund's endeavours, and his aspirations for
the Himalayan people.
